Ednarae Maas

October 23, 1922 — July 10, 2011

EdnaRae Maas, age 88 of Hot Springs, Montana, passed away peacefully in her sleep Sunday Morning July 10, 2011 at her residence. EdnaRae was born October 23, 1922 in Tigerton, Shawano County, Wisconsin, the daughter of Ray and Edna (Carter) Drake. During her youth she loved to work with horses, and assisted her father and brothers who operated Drake's Riding Academy at Shawano Lake. She became an accomplished rider and on several occasions rode in local horse races. Following graduation from Shawano High School in 1940, she moved to Chicago and worked first at Mars Candy Company until the outbreak of WW II, at which time she worked for Revere Copper Works. On June 16, 1943 she married Kennon Maas in Chicago, Cook County, Illinois. When WW II ended, she and Kennon returned to Shawano, Wisconsin. In 1953 they relocated to Northwestern Montana, and then in the late 1950's moved to California, living in Blythe, Redding, and Lompoc. They returned to Hot Springs, Montana in 1968 and following retirement in 1975, she and Kennon moved to Dragoon, Arizona and resided there several years before returning to Hot Springs in 1979. EdnaRae loved the outdoors, fishing, rock and bottle hunting, family outings and her lifelong pastime, sketching and painting. Kennon preceded EdnaRae in death on May 23, 1993. She was also preceded by her parents, 3 brothers Oscar, Irvin, and Victor Drake; an infant sister, Violet; her granddaughters husband Michael Milat; brothers-in-law and sisters-in-law Lester and Emma Maas, Elmo, MT; Merlin Maas, Myrtle Maas of Bowler, WI; Hazel Drake, Green Bay, WI. EdnaRAe's wishes were to have no visitation or viewing, but the family will have a private memorial service later this year. The family wishes to express special thanks to Jim and Deb Hauge and George Parsons for their assistance in providing tender and compassionate care for Mom this past year. Survivors include her 3 children: David (Ingrid) Maas of Lakeside, MT; Joel Maas of Hot Springs, MT; Peggy (George) Heinselman, Hot Springs, MT; 3 grandchildren Tina Milat, Hot Springs, MT; Caleb Heinselman, Melbourne, Australia, and Jeremy Running Wolf, Hot Springs, MT; 2 great granddaughters Misty Dougherty, Hot Springs, MT; and Matilda Heinselman, Melbourne, Australia; sisters-in-law June Drake, Margie (Russ) Eastburn, Shawano, WI; Ginger Drake, Green Bay, WI, and many nieces and nephews.
