Joyce Reed

March 17, 1929 — August 6, 2022

Joyce C Reed age 93 of Kalispell MT died on August 6, 2022 at Whitefish Care and Rehabilitation. Joyce was born in 1929 in Lima MT,  she and brother Jack were raised by parents Alma and Alice (Dowell) Clark.  She graduated from Missoula County High School (now Hellgate) and the University of Montana with a BA in Art.   She married Harry Koski and they had 2 children Steven and Pamela.  After her divorce from Harry she was reacquainted with high school friend Dallas Reed.  They married in 1962 and moved to Pocatello ID. In 1965 daughter Allison was born.  As Dallas was a sociology professor the family moved to Las Vegas in 1970 so he could teach at the newly renamed UNLV.   In 1994 Dallas retired and they built a home in Polson MT.

Joyce lived her life seeing art in most things. Most of her work life involved creating art in one fashion or another.  Her many jobs included the JC Penny art and display office in Missoula. She used her art degree to teach-her first year in Wolfpoint MT.,  then taught high school art at Sentenel High School in Missoula.  In Idaho she taught elementary teachers with no art skill how to teach art in their classrooms. In Las Vegas she got her realtors license and sold homes for a time.  She then decided she would work for the Las Vegas Review Journal Newspaper in the advertising art department.   One spring she was given the assignment to do the cover of the yearly home renewal insert. Her idea was to have a turtle with a flower painted on his shell. When one reader complained her future was set. She started getting turtle figurines year after year.  For a few years she also did advertising layout for private clients too. When she stopped working she joined the Las Vegas Art Museum. She was able to spend more time painting in acrylics. During their marriage Joyce and Dallas

enjoyed traveling, camping and scenic vacations.  Dallas loved photography and to develop his own pictures and mom loved to paint from them. When they retired to Polson they both joined the Sandpiper Art Gallery and found a place to make new friends and pursue their artistic joy. After Dallas died in 1998 Allison moved to Polson to live with Joyce. Joyce had long ago switched to watercolor and enjoyed battling how unforgiving watercolor paint can be. In 2005 both Joyce and Allison moved to Kalispell. She found a drawing group at the Community College and joined the Epworth United Methodist Church and made friends in the UM Womens group she joined.  At this time she started painting portraits and did quite a few portraits on commission.  She had a great Eye to see how a persons face fit together. Joyce is a signature member of the Montana Watercolor Society. Joyce also loved to read fiction, she especially enjoyed English mysteries.

Joyce was preceded in death by her mother and father, her husband Dallas and her two eldest children Steven and Pamela. She is survived by her brother Jack Clark of Missoula MT, daughter Allison Reed of Kalispell MT, grandsons Kevin Reed of Plentywood MT,  Jason Henrickson of Yreka CA, Trevor Reed, and Matthew Reed of Billings and granddaughter Melissa Banister of Phoenix AZ and many great grandchildren.
