Mayme Rung Mullis died of natural causes on December 15, 2018 at Kalispell Regional Medical Center, surrounded by her loved ones. She was born May 14, 1926 in Utica, Montana, to Clarence D. and Dollie D. Rung. She was the youngest of four children. Her parents had moved from Missouri to homestead at Utica, where they raised cattle. The family later moved to Stanford, Montana where a grade school and a high school were available. The two older sisters graduated from high school there.
In 1937, the family moved to the Mission Valley, and farmed south of Polson (Valley View) for many years. Mayme attended a rural school through the 8th grade, then graduated from Polson High School in 1944. From there she went to Spokane to attend Kinman Business University where she graduated with a Bachelor’s Degree. When they moved their office to Idaho, she went to Seattle to work for GMAC Corp. From there she was called back to Polson due to a serious injury to a family member. She worked in Polson, for the Lake County Superintendent of Schools and public health nurse.
Mayme married Lloyd Mullis of Ronan, Montana on June 7, 1947. He worked for the State Highway Department for a year, then went to partnership farming with Mayme’s parents until the farm sold. They bought a home in the Flathead Valley and moved to Kalispell, Montana April 1, 1953. Mayme joined the workforce soon after that. She worked at the beautiful Hacienda Restaurant for Al and Myrna Fopp, then back to office work with the Co. Field State of Alaska Commercial Fisheries for one year. After that they went back home to Kalispell, where she worked for Conrad Bank (now First Interstate) as a secretary for several years. The following 7 years she worked for the State Welfare Dept.
During their working years, Lloyd and Mayme raised their three children. They also took care of two teenage foster boys for six months, until the boys were 18 years old. Both Lloyd’s widowed mother and Mayme’s widowed mother resided in the household as well for 22 years. Mayme quit working in 1977 due to a severe back injury. She and Lloyd were divorced in 1985. She never remarried. She loved her home and was able to stay there until her passing at 92 years of age.
